Dr. Sanil Rege, Consultant Psychiatrist and Founder of Psych Scene and Psych Scene Hub speaks to Dr. Martijn Arns, Chief Scientific Adviser, neuroCare Group; Founding Director & Senior Researcher at Research Institute Brainclinics.

Author Quote

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been around for a long time. The first discovery showed that if you stimulate the primary motor strip you see contralateral sub-movement – a very powerful demonstration that, noninvasively, people were able to stimulate brain activity.

Take-home Messages:

  • In the early 1990s the first trials showed some efficacy for rTMS in the treatment of depression
  • The parameters within which rTMS is applied have completely changed since the original serendipitous discoveries of a potential treatment in depression
  • Results from the latest, large-scale studies of rTMS with psychotherapy in treatment-resistant depression are promising, with good efficacy for response and remission
